The most anticipated Malayalam movie, Odiyan, released to a huge record breaking response in Kerala. The movie was also released in a record number of screens for a Malayalam movie. The film starred Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in the lead role, and hit the screens on 14 December 2018.
Odiyan took a record breaking opening at the Malayalam box office by collecting around an estimated ~4.5 crores on its first day. The film also saw unprecedented numbers of advance bookings for a Malayalam film. Early morning shows, as early as 5 AM were held at several single screens across Kerala, for the fans. The movie ran to packed houses at both the single screens and the multiplexes on its first day. The film enjoyed an overall occupancy rate of more than 96% on its first day.
The film took a drop in its second day collections at box office, which was obvious, because the first day had considerably more number of shows, owing to the fan shows and the early morning shows. Partly, also due to the negative critical response and not so good audience word-of-mouth.
Odiyan's collections took a major hit on its first Monday, as collections dropped by around 60% at the box office, which set the tone for the rest of the week. The film did respectable business in its second and third week.
Odiyan was the most awaited Malayalam movie, as the trailer had evoked a huge response from the audience. The good promotions also ensured an amazing hype surrounding the movie. The film's unique storyline had people curious and guessing.
However, Odiyan opened to mixed to negative reviews from the critics, and the audience word-of-mouth also leaned towards the negative side.
