Imaikkaa Nodigal Tamil Movie Review

Imaikkaa Nodigal is a Tamil crime thriller film directed by R. Ajay Gnanamuthu. Nayanthara and Anurag Kashyap play the lead roles.

Imaikkaa Nodigal is about a serial killer named 'Rudra' who abducts the kids of the rich, and demands two crore rupees as ransom for the release, and kills them even after getting the ransom money. CBI officer Anjali (Nayanthara) is assigned to the task of nabbing Rudra. Rudra continues with his kidnappings and dares the CBI to catch him. How the CBI tries to catch 'Rudra' forms the rest of the film.

Imaikkaa Nodigal has unnecessarily lengthy subplots, songs and comic reliefs in the first half that dilute the film and take the focus away from the main theme of film. But even with a lengthy subplot that doesn't add much to the main plot, the first half of film is still better than the second. The suspense is decently well built and the very nature of the story makes the first half quite intriguing, even though there are a few portions that could have been handled better. First half ends on a high note, evoking curiosity and sets up a nice platform for the second half to take off.

Imaikkaa Nodigal takes a wrong turn post interval and collapses thereafter due to poor writing. The second half is riddled with forced twists, comic reliefs and patchy boring narration. There are a few bright moments but they quickly die down, making the film frustrating. The poor writing really shows in the second half. Some of the twists and turns are forcefully added to the plot just for dishing out some cheap thrills, which makes them unconvincing and at times laughable. The suspense of the motive of the serial killer when revealed is so awful, unconvincing and under thought that it just ruins the film. And the unnecessary and forced heroism of Atharva's character ruins the movie further.

The characters which should have gotten more screen-time and a proper treatment are played out superficially, while the characters which get considerable screen-time, add very less to the plot and behave the exact opposite way than they were developed, in the later part of the film. In the first half of the film, Anjali's kid brother Arjun's character is developed as a MBBS graduate and an obsessive boyfriend. But in the second half, the character is radically changed and is portrayed as a pro-detective and trained fighter that beats half a dozen armed policemen to pulp! While the ACP Martin's character which is central to film, is undercooked.

Imaikkaa Nodigal starts with a good pace but soon gets slowed down by a lengthy love story. But again gets back on track only to take a nosedive in the second half. The film never recovers post interval and stupidity takes the driver seat. Imaikkaa Nodigal starts on a good note promising to deliver a taut thriller, but as the movie progresses especially after the interval it becomes a silly illogical mess. In the end, Imaikkaa Nodigal ends as a disappointment which started quite promisingly.

Nayanthara does a decent job playing her character, CBI officer Anjali. Anurag Kashyap who plays the villain in Imaikkaa Nodigal, does pretty well. Cinematography and music are decent as well.

Overall, Imaikkaa Nodigal is a mediocre film that can be watched once.
