ZERO Movie Review

Zero is a fantasy romance drama directed by Anand L Rai of 'Tanu Weds Manu' fame. Zero stars Shahrukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. The trailer was quite promising, let's find out how the film is. Read on.

'Zero' revolves around Bauua Singh (Shahrukh Khan), and he is the soul and star of the film. He is a bachelor who is post the "marriageable age", and is searching for a bride, but every time, his short stature gets in the way. Anushka Sharma plays the role of the wheelchair-bound scientist, Afia, who is affected by cerebral palsy.

The characters are sufficiently well developed, and have been nicely portrayed. Even though the lead characters are built upon a shortcoming / disability, they are cheerful, and are showcased in a light-hearted manner, which makes sure the film doesn't turn into a total tearjerker. You feel for the characters, and yet you are not really sympathetic towards them, because they don't really let their disability hold them back, and after a certain point you don't feel they are disabled.

The initial part of the film spends time in setting up the base for the fantastical turn of events in the later part of the film. The film gives enough screen time for its two lead characters, and particularly dwells deeper on Bauua, giving us all the aspects of his character.

Zero is high-spirited in its nature, and the happy and witty Bauua makes sure the film is a joyful watch for most of its part.

The narration is upsurge and well structured, and keeps you engaged throughout the film.  The film flows forward smoothly and is very evenly paced, even though a few portions feel slightly stretched. The screenplay is appealing and well written, and it shows on the screen.

The film effectively well-handles the emotions. The fine amalgamation of contrasting sentiments leads to the formation of unique overwhelming emotional architectures that cannot be put into words. The emotional aspects of the film are tender, and not over-the-top, yet are impactful and make you invested.

The actors have done a good job playing their respective characters. They incorporate the souls of the characters in themselves and effectively portray them on the screen, even though, occasionally you can see some of the actors signature mannerisms and clichéd styles showing up. Shahrukh Khan wins you over with his performance as Bauua, and shows his acting prowess through the character. Anushka Sharma should be applauded as well. Katrina Kaif is the ornament of the film.

Cinematography is one of the high points of the film. The camera work by Manu Anand beautifully showcases the film, and some of the scenes in the film have been exceptionally well-shot. The background music by Ajay-Atul plays a great part in setting up the mood of the film, and elevates the movie to another level.

Overall, Zero gets most of the things right, and can definitely be watched.

Rating-3.5/5
