Kalank set to take a good opening

Kalank Box Office Prediction | Analysis

The multi-starrer period-drama film, Kalank, is releasing tomorrow on 17 April (Wednesday). The film is directed by Abhishek Varman, who previously directed the 2014 box office hit, '2 States', featuring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor. And, Kalank features Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt as its lead pair. Also featuring in Kalank's star cast are Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit. So, let's analyse the box office prospective of the film.

Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, the lead pair of 'Kalank', are coming after individual successful films at the box office. And, they have also given box office hits together as a lead pair in form of films like 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' and 'Badrinath Ki Dulhania'. The box office track record of the lead pair of the film is good, so the opening box office numbers of 'Kalank' are going to be good. The director of the film, Abhishek Varman, also has a hit film under his name, but, Kalank is a totally different kind of film than his 2014 film '2 States'. But, his filmography says that he has been an assistant director to films like 'Jodha Akbar'.

Kalank is releasing in the middle of the week on Wednesday, instead of a regular Friday release. The Hollywood superhero film, 'Avengers Endgame', which is looming over like a storm waiting to hit, apparently has pushed ahead the release date of Kalank. 'Avengers Endgame' is releasing in India on Friday 26th April.

Kalank, because of its Wednesday release, now has 9 days open platform to perform at the box office before 'Avengers Endgame' arrives, and also Kalank is the solo big Bollywood release this week. The Wednesday release is usually a risky business decision, because of it being a regular working day, and if the film fails to impress the audience, there will be enough time till Saturday and Sunday for the negative word-of-mouth to spread and for the the hype surrounding the film to wear down, resulting in low Saturday and Sunday numbers. But, Kalank may not be at much risk, because Wednesday (17 April) is a holiday in most parts of the country on the occasion of 'Mahavir Jayanti', and Friday is again a holiday due to 'Good Friday'. And, also the Lok Sabha election voting holidays on different days in different parts of the country will also come into play. The opening day box office collection will be big because of the big star cast and the holiday release, and this may propel the film at the box office for the next couple of days, but after that the word-of-mouth will kick-in. If the fails to impress the audience, the Saturday and Sunday collections are not going to see a big rise, and the film will struggle post-Sunday at the box office. And, if Kalank garners good word-of-mouth and positive critical response, it can do amazing business at the box office.

Kalank has almost no Bollywood competition this week at the box office. Last week was almost a non-release week for Bollywood at the box office, as only small insignificant films (with respect to box office performance) like 'Tashkent Files' and others released. And, Akshay Kumar's 'Kesari', which is on its last legs at the box office poses no threat to 'Kalank', and it's the same case with 'Romeo Akbar Walter' which released two weeks ago. Lesser competition and holidays along with being the solo Bollywood release this week, will serve as an advantage to Kalank at the box office.

From the trailer, Kalank appears to be a serious dialogue-oriented period drama, which the mass audience may not like. Because of its genre and content, Kalank will mainly be a multiplex-driven film at the box office. Single screens can put-up good numbers in the first few days because of the fan following of the star cast. But, after that, it will be mostly the urban multiplex audience who are going to patronize this film.

And, because Kalank will primarily be catering to the urban multiplex audience, it has to do most of its business in the 9 days period before 'Avengers Endgame' arrives at the Indian box office, as there will be a big audience overlap between the two films. If Kalank fails to impress its core audience, the urban youth, they will be quick to dump this film in favour of the 'Avengers Endgame'. And, teens and college-going youth may choose to save money for 'Avengers' by not watching Kalank at all.

Overall, Kalank may collect around ~15 - 17 crores on its first day at the box office.
