Despite some of the flaws, director Nikkhil Advani deftly handles a complex subject making ‘Batla House’ an intense, gripping watch.

There is much to admire in Batla House but the film is ultimately betrayed by its own prejudices.

But stray flashes apart, the dramatized true story drifts too far from the heart of the matter without delivering the expected drama.

John Abraham is strictly one-note, which may be how dour cops are meant to come off, but it becomes same-same in a screenplay stretched to show off a well-muscled chest.

The film is, however, rarely riveting. There’s no true tension, largely because of a mediocre supporting cast who are theatrical in their fear or even their laughter.

Batla House will satisfy John Abraham fans. Viewers looking for a more layered exploration of izzat, farz, desh should probably go elsewhere.

But no doubt, it keeps you stuck to the seat nonetheless, largely for the rich visual detailing, meaty research gluing it all together.

There is enough time to develop KK’s character, but he is soon forgotten in the pursuit of boosting the Sanjeev Kumar mythos.

Batla House combines all the essential tropes of mainstream Bollywood films in remarkably entertaining fashion, and make you sit and notice the fluidity of the narrative.

What really works for the film are the action-chase sequences which have been visualised and executed meticulously to infuse tension.

The relevant plot, watertight screenplay, clapworthy moments and terrific performance by John Abraham make BATLA HOUSE one of the finest films of the year.
