Thappad HIT OR FLOP?

Verdict - HIT.

Thappad Box Office Notes

Opening Note - 'Thappad' took a good opening at the box office, for a small-budget niche genre film without a male lead, with limited target-audience. The film has taken a better opening than Superstar Kangana Ranaut's film 'Panga' which had taken an opening of close to 2 crores, and was also a multiplex-oriented film like 'Thappad'. 'Thappad's first day collection is around 3 crores, and the film was mainly patronized by the urban multiplex audience specially the women. The film opened to 100% positive reviews from the critics, and the initial audience word-of-mouth also leans towards the positive side. 'Thappad' should grow well on Day-2 considering the positive feedback all-over.

Saturday Day-2 Collection: The film witnessed a good rise at the box office on Day-2, as it grew by around 65-70%. 'Thappad' collected around 5.00 crores on Saturday, taking the two days total to 8.00 crores.

Sunday Day 3 Collection: 'Thappad' saw another good growth on Sunday on top of the Saturday's growth. The film grew by around 25% from Saturday, and the growth mainly came from the multiplexes of the Metros and the Tier-1 cities. So far, 'Thappad' has been quite good at the box office, and the weekdays hold will be crucial in deciding the fate of the film. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the Taapsee Pannu starrer has collected around 6.25 crores on Sunday which takes the first weekend total to approx 14.25 crores.

Monday Day 4 Collection: 'Thappad' held well at the box office on Monday, as it dropped by only 30% vis-à-vis Friday. The Day-4 good hold shows the sustained good positive audience word-of-mouth the film has got. 'Thappad' collected around 2.10 crores on Monday, which takes the overall four days total to 16.35 crores.

1st Week Collection: The film has collected around approx 22 crores in its first week at the box office. The 1st week collections have been good, and the collections in 2nd week will decide the final verdict of the film.

2nd Friday Collection: 'Thappad' collected around 85 lakhs on its second Friday. The film fell by around 50% vis-à-vis Thursday, in the wake of the new release 'Baaghi 3' this Friday, which made a dent in 'Thappad's screen-space considerably.

2nd Weekend Collection Update: Even though the film fell by 50% on 2nd Friday vis-à-vis Thursday, 'Thappad' put-up a good 2nd weekend total by virtue of good growths it witnessed on 2nd Saturday and 2nd Sunday. Even with the release of a huge film like 'Baaghi' which reduced 'Thappad's screens and showings, the film held commendably well for a small film that it is. The film saw 85-90% rise on Day-9, and around 35% rise on Day-10 as compared to their respective previous days. The second weekend collection is around 4.60 crores, which takes the overall total of 'Thappad' till date to 26.55 crores.

2nd Week Collection: 'Thappad' made use of the Holi holiday that fell on Tuesday, as it showed a good growth in its collections. The Holi period also helped the film stay steady in the weekdays of 2nd week. Taapsee Pannu's 'Thappad' collected a good 8.20 crores in Week-2, even with a huge release like 'Baaghi 3' running alongside with it at the cinemas. The total box office collection till date is around 30.15 crores. The coronavirus scare is beginning to affect the film, as is evident by the drop on Thursday. The theatres in the states of Delhi, Kerala and J&K have been ordered to shut down, which is further going to affect the film's collection in Week-3.

3rd Weekend Collection: The film saw heavy drop in its collections due to gradual closure of cinema halls across the country over the course of three days from Friday, 13 March. As of now, more than 20 states have shut their cinema halls to prevent the spread of the nCoV-19. 'Thappad' has collected around 75 lakhs in its 3rd weekend, and it won't be adding much to its overall box-office total from hereon. The film's collection till date is approx 31 crores, and it's a box-office success.
