Made In China: HIT or FLOP?

Made In China Day 1 Collection Prediction | Analysis

The comedy film, 'Made in China', featuring actor Rajkumar Rao in the lead role of a Gujarati business man, is all set to release this Friday. The film is releasing during the Diwali festive occasion, and is releasing alongside two other Bollywood films, 'Housefull 4' and 'Saand Ki Aankh'. In this post, we'll try to analyse the box office prospects of the film and predict the first day box office opening figures.

'Made In China', even though is releasing during the Diwali holiday period, is in a 3-way clash at the box office. Actor Akshay Kumar starrer multi-starrer comedy film, 'Housefull 4', will take away the most number of screens being a bigger film in almost all the aspects, be it the star cast, the budget, the level of promotions and publicity, and the huge box office potential it has because of the above factors. And, even though there is a considerable tussle for screens among the films, the effect of these films on eachother's business, we believe, is going to be quite minimal. In the long run, may be, one of these films might actually affect the business of the other, if any one or two films don't live-up to the expectations of the audience and get rejected in favour of the other. But, on the first day or at least till the first weekend/festive holidays, all the three films will mostly get their respective audience irrespective of the performance of the other. In fact, the lead star cast, the pre-release buzz, the hype and the quantum of audience interest that these films have build for themselves through their promotional materials like the trailers, songs, posters and other promotional activities will have a lot of effect in bringing the audience into the cinemas in the first few days.

Of all the three releases, 'Made In China' has comparatively the least amount of publicity and promotional activities going for it. Looks like the makers have put their bet on the well-received trailer, content of the movie and the audience word-of-mouth to do the magic at the box office. It has got a significant amount of attention due to the clash with 'Housefull 4', which has led to good audience awareness about its release, but that is all passive publicity. And, the lead actor, Rajkumar Rao, is not someone who is known for huge openings at the box office, and neither does he has much box office pull by himself. Hence, the Day 1 collections are not going to be huge, and mostly will be under 6 crores. If the film can get an opening of more than 6 crores, it will most definitely be considered as a very good opening. And honestly, 'Made In China' doesn't have to get a huge opening to be successful at the box office, unlike the big-budget 'Housefull 4'.

Both 'Housefull 4' and 'Made In China' belong to the comedy genre, however, both are different types of comedies that actually appeal to different sections of the audiences. If we go by the trailers, 'Housefull 4' seems to be a juvenile mindless masala comedy that is easy on the brains, the 'Housefull' brand of comedy, if you can call it. And, these kind of comedies have a good audience base. And unlike 'Housefull 4', 'Made In China' appears to be more of a situational comedy with a mix of other elements and emotions, and also a story to narrate along. So, there might not be much overlap between the audience, at least in the first weekend. The section of audience that is excited to watch 'Housefull 4' will watch 'Housefull 4'. And same with the section that intends to watch 'Made In China'. But, could these films have made more business at the box office had they been released solo? Possible, yes, 'Housefull 4' has the potential to actually add, may be, another crore or so to its first day total. But, for the smaller films like 'Made In China' and 'Saand Ki Aankh', the clash actually gives them more publicity, more exposure and elevates their box office stature because of their clash with a bigger film. And, all these factors give a good boost to their box office collections. And these films end-up with better box office prospects than when released solo, which is specially true for 'Saand Ki Aankh'. But, these 'smaller' films have to have their own reputation and stature even to get noticed in a clash and take advantage. Otherwise, they will drown at the box office fighting a biggie like 'Housefull 4'.

The trailer of the film was quite good, and promised to tell an interesting story along with a good dose of comedy. The trailer, alone has managed to stir-up the interest levels among the audience.

In conclusion, we predict 'Made In China' to collect in around 3.5-4.5 crores on its first day at the box office. The film has the potential to grow at the box office in the later days depending upon the audience response and the critical reception.
