PM Narendra Modi Box Office Prediction | Analysis

The Political biographical film, 'PM Narendra Modi', starring actor Vivek Oberoi in the titular role, is releasing this Friday at the box office. The movie is directed by Omung Kumar of 'Mary Kom' fame. The film was originally scheduled to release in the month of April before the Lok Sabha elections, but the Election Commission had blocked its release saying that the film disturbs the level playing field. But, the film is now finally releasing on May 24th, after the elections are over.

The film had the perfect release timing in April during the election season, where it could have raked in much more moolah at the box office than many might have imagined. The atmosphere in the country was immensely favourable, and the political emotions among the public were at an all-time high. The film was also surrounded by controversy, and had gotten good publicity because of all these factors. But, now since the elections are over, the hugely favourable environment that the film had in April has now turned relatively cold. The iron was hot to hit a month ago, now has lost significant amount of temperature. Also, the film doesn't serve any purpose as the elections are over. May be the filmmakers should hold back the release of the film for another 4.5 years? But, the film would have definitely earned more at the box office had it been released in April.

The film belongs to political genre, which have consistently under-performed at the Indian box office; but, of late, these political themed films have found an audience. The recent political films, 'The Accidental PM' and 'The Tashkent Files', have far exceeded all the trade expectations at the box office, when the films were expected to be total disasters. 'The Accidental PM' had collected around ~20 crores at the Indian box office. The film lacked any 'Star Actors', and was also an atrociously made film; and even faced stiff competition from the patriotic-action film 'URI The Surgical Strike' which had released on the same day. Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Tashkent Files', a gripping political thriller, became a 'sleeper-hit' by collecting around ~14 crores at the box office, even when surrounded by big releases like 'Kalank' and 'Avengers Endgame'. And, even with the overwhelming negative reviews from the critics, both the 'Accidental PM' and 'The Tashkent Files' got more than expected response at the box office. It will once again be the same target audience for 'PM Narendra Modi', and the audience base this time will be comparatively wider, because the real life personality on whom this movie is based on, has a huge fan base and enjoys support of a significant chunk of India's population, and also because the film has a relatively popular actor as its lead. So, the box office collections of 'PM Narendra Modi' will be better than both 'The Accidental PM' and 'The Tashkent Files'. But, the point to be noted is that both the films released before and quite close to the elections, when the scenario was a lot more favourable.

Releasing opposite 'PM Narendra Modi', is the movie named 'India's Most Wanted', starring Arjun Kapoor, whose most recent film, 'Namaste England', was a box office disaster. And the holdover film, 'SOTY 2', is already done and dusted at the box office, and the current release 'De De Pyar De' which will be in its second week from this Friday, isn't going to affect 'PM Modi' much. So, there is not much competition for the film at the box office. Even the domestic T20 cricket league, IPL, has come to an end, which apparently adversely affected SOTY 2's collections. And, the 'Cricket World Cup' is also at least two weeks away.

But, the film lacks the novelty factor as there isn't really anything about Narendra Modi that is unknown. So, the film might be unappealing for a good number of people. And, also the film caters to a very narrow target audience because of its genre. But, even then, the film will get good footfalls at the box office, because Modi's fans won't let him down. A film named after PM Narendra Modi, based on his life, is not going be a flop; his chowkidars will make sure that the film ends its box office run with a 'HIT' tag.

This film will be critic-proof, as those who want to watch this film, will watch; and those who don't want to watch, won't watch; irrespective of the reviews, be it positive or negative. The audience for this film is very clear cut. Even if the film turns out be badly made, it will get whatever it has to get at the box office.

Overall, 'PM Narendra Modi' might collect around ~4 - 5 crores on its first day at the box office.
