Dabangg 3 HIT OR FLOP?

Verdict - Flop.

Dabangg 3 Box Office Notes

Opening Note - The opening day collections of 'Dabangg 3' are pretty disappointing. The film was expected to collect at least 30 crores on its first day, but it has fallen short of it by a long margin. The advance bookings had already indicated what was in store for 'Dabangg 3' on Day 1 at the box office, but the hopes were still there as the expectations were pinned on the spot bookings/walk-ins. Alas, 'Dabangg 3' could only manage ~21.5 crores; and even though the opening is quite underwhelming, it is still a good non-holiday opening day collection. 'Dabangg 3' is the highest opening (net collection) film in the 'Dabangg' series, but this is not something to cheer about as 'Dabangg 2' which was released 7 years back in 2012 had collected ~19.25 crores (net) on its first day. The dated feel of 'Dabangg 3', and the strictly average trailer along with the unmemorable songs seem to have failed to bring the non-fan audience to the cinemas. And, the protests across the country which have led to cases of sporadic violence, curfews, section 144s and deaths of people in police firing, have created an environment of fear leading to people opting to stay indoors in the problem areas.

Day 2 Note: 'Dabangg 3' stayed flat at the box office on Day 2, with negligible drop in collections. Ideally, the movie should've shown at least a decent growth, but the unfavorable conditions have put a break on 'Dabangg 3's growth. The non-Hindi version collections are almost non-existent and add nothing significant to the total. The dubbed versions got only limited number of screens, and obviously the collections won't be big from small number of shows. The Kannada version had only 70 shows in Bangalore on Day 1 compared to almost 300 shows for the Hindi version in Bangalore. The southern audience have gotten used to watching Bollywood films in Hindi for decades now, and there is no reason for them to watch them in dubbed versions. Even 'War's dubbed versions didn't fetch much at the box office. And, the exhibitors from whom we get our data from, told us that the Hindi version sold more tickets than the Kannada version, therefore their hesitancy in allotting more shows to the Kannada dubbed version is understandable. It would be better for Bollywood to save money by not unnecessarily dubbing films into languages with don't make money at the box office. It is understandable when south films get dubbed into Hindi, because the northern audience don't understand the southern languages. But, most of the movie-going audience in the Karnataka, AP/TG understand Hindi and prefer the original version above the dubbed versions.

Day 3 Note: Just when it looked like that 'Dabangg 3' might not grow in the weekends, after the flat/ slight drop on Saturday, the film witnessed a much needed growth on Sunday (Day 3). 'Dabangg 3' grew by around 20-25% on Sunday vis-à-vis Friday. The advance bookings for Sunday had already indicated of the growth, as the bookings for Sunday were notably better Friday and Saturday. This gives the film a hope of sustaining better in the weekdays, and also there is Christmas holiday on Wednesday. We will have to wait to see how the film performs in the days coming.

Day 4 Note: 'Dabangg 3' witnessed around ~55% drop in its collections on Monday vis-à-vis Friday. The film collected around ~9.40 crores on its fourth day at the box office inclusive of all its dubbed versions.

Day 5 Note: The film held very well on its fifth day with only a marginal drop in its collections, mainly due to increase in occupancy in the evening and night shows mostly at the multiplexes. Tuesday was 'Christmas Eve', and Wednesday is a National holiday due to Christmas festival. 'Dabangg 3' should grow on Day 6 (Christmas), which will help it in putting-up a good first week total, and also help the film in recovering the lost ground in the first weekend due to protests as the scale of protests have come down nation-wide barring a few places.

Day 6 Note: On Wednesday (Christmas Holiday), 'Dabangg 3' witnessed a good solid growth of around 55-60% vis-à-vis Tuesday. The growth mainly came from the Hindi version, which is doing more than 98% of the overall business for the film at the box office. Among the dubbed versions, only the Kannada version showed growth on Wednesday. The south regional films had a comparatively better outing at the box office on Christmas than 'Dabangg 3'. 'Dabangg 3' s Thursday hold will point towards the future course of the film at the box office.

Day 7 Note: 'Dabangg 3' has held fairly well on Thursday as it witnessed only around 20-25% drop vis-à-vis Tuesday. The first week collections are pretty good, and it all now depends on how well the film can do in its second week with considerably reduced screens as Akshay Kumar's 'Good Newwz' has hit the screens.

Day 8 (2nd Friday) Note: 'Dabangg 3' has held well despite a large reduction in the number of screens in week 2. The new release, 'Good Newwz', took away a huge portion of the 'Dabangg 3's screens especially at the multiplexes. Now it is only the original Hindi version that continues to be the collector at the box office as the dubbed versions are almost out of the cinemas. The Tamil version is completely out of the theatres in the second week, and the Kannada and Telugu versions only have a handful number of screens in the second week. But, the dubbed versions never really contributed significantly to the overall total with their meagre collections even in the first week. 'Dabangg 3' should continue to accumulate at the box office till the 10th of January, as there are no movie releases till 'Tanhaji', 'Chhapaak' and 'Darbar's releases.

Week 2 Note: 'Dabangg 3' saw around ~85% drop in collections at the box office in its second week compared to first week. The film faced tough competition at the multiplexes in form of 'Good Newwz' which took away a significant chunk of its screens especially at the multiplexes. 'Dabangg 3' indeed witnessed growth on New Year's eve and New Year's day, but the growth can only be termed as nominal because of the low base collections in week 2. But, if not for the New Year occasion, 'Dabangg 3's second week collections would've been even lower. Since there are no new Bollywood releases this week, 'Dabangg 3' should continue to accumulate for at least another week till 'Tanhaji, 'Chhapaak' and a bunch of other films arrive.

Day 15 (3rd Friday) Collection Note: 'Dabangg 3' has further dropped on its 3rd Friday at the box office. The film dropped by 50% on 3rd Friday compared to the previous day. 'Dabangg 3' collected a meagre ~65 lakhs on Day 15, and all of the dubbed versions' theatrical run has come to an end. The Kannada version has just 4-5 screens in the third weekend, which are there just for the namesake. 'Dabangg 3's Hindi version also looks to end its theatrical run by the end of its third week, when 'Tanhaji', 'Chhapaak' and 'Darbar' arrive at the box office.

End of 3rd Week Note: 'Dabangg 3' has almost exhausted its box office run, and it won't add much to its total post-Week 3. The filmed has turned-out be an unsuccessful one. And, as much as we blame the protests for denting its collections, the film being a below average product in terms of quality should also share the blame. And, 'Good Newwz' coming just a week after, made 'Dabangg 3's life more difficult at the box office.

End of 4th Week Note: 'Dabangg 3' had a nominal collection of only around ~15 lakhs in its 4th week, and has completed its box office run. The year 2019 did not end well for Salman Khan in terms of box office collections.
