Tanhaji HIT OR FLOP?

Verdict - HIT.

Tanhaji Box Office Notes

Opening Note - 'Tanhaji' took a good opening at the box office, which is more than what was initially expected out of the film. The film got an unexpected support from the usual suspects, in view of the raging controversy due to actress Deepika Padukone's visit to an University. The film opened to a lukewarm response in the morning and grew very well later in the day to post a good first day total. A huge chunk of the 'Tanhaji's box office collections came from Maharashtra, due to the film's local content and story. If we take-out Maharashtra's collections, the collections elsewhere are pretty average for a big-budget epic movie. In fact, Mumbai (traditional circuit) alone contributed 6.50-6.75 crores to the first day total. And, if we breakdown into individual cities, Mumbai contributed ~2.50 crores and Pune contributed ~1.40 crores on Day 1. The other film, 'Chhapaak', which released alongside took a strictly decent opening and was no threat to 'Tanhaji', apart from a few places like Bangalore, where 'Chhapaak's collections almost matched-up to 'Tanhaji's. The Marathi version of 'Tanhaji' collected around 7 lakhs, but it got only limited number of shows compared to the Hindi version, hence the collection appear small.

Day 2 (Saturday) Collection Note: 'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' witnessed a growth of around 50-55% on its second day at the box office. This growth almost shows the good audience word-of-mouth the film is enjoying. The places which were average on Day 1 have joined Maharashtra at the box office on Day 2, helping the film in posting a good rise. Even Maharashtra which was high on Day 1, saw a growth of around 45% on Day 2. In fact, the Marathi version doubled-up its first day collections on Day 2. The film seems to be on the right path going into Sunday, where it can bring the family audience to the cinemas in big numbers.

Day 3 (Sunday) Collection Note: The film posted another good total of around 26 crores on Sunday, which takes the first weekend all version box office total to approx 59.50 crores. 'Tanhaji' has performed extremely well in the state of Maharashtra, and just the 2 cities, Mumbai and Pune, alone have together contributed almost ~18 crores in the first weekend total of 59.50 crores. And, the film has also showed significant growth even in places that didn't perform to their potential on Day 1. For example, Delhi-NCR (Not Delhi/UP circuit) which had collected only around 1.30 crores on Day 1 (Chhapaak Delhi-NCR Day 1 - 1.00 crore), collected ~2.40 cr. on Day 2 and ~2.85 cr. on Day 3. The growth from Day 1 to Day 2 is a huge ~85%. Going by the current trend, 'Tanhaji' is looking forward to hold well at the box office in the weekdays to post a good first week total.

Day 4 (Monday) Collection Note: 'Tanhaji' did not show any drop on Monday as compared to Friday, and, in fact, collected slightly higher than Friday. The film is well on its way to be the first Hit of 2020. 'Tanhaji' has collected over 73 crores from its first 4 days at the box office, and it will easily cross the 100 crore mark by the end of Week 1.

Day 5 (Tuesday) Collection Note: 'Tanaji' saw a good rise in its collection due to holiday in a few states. The film witnessed a growth of around ~15-20% on Tuesday vis-à-vis Monday, and collected around ~16 crores, which takes the overall five days all version box office total to around 89.25 crores. There is again holiday tomorrow in a few states and 'Tanhaji' should collect at similar levels again. The film will easily cross the 100 crore mark tomorrow, and will be the first film of year 2020 to do so.

Day 6 (Wednesday) Collection Note: 'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' rose at the box office on Wednesday by around ~5-10% vis-à-vis Tuesday, by virtue of holiday in several states. The film has effectively utilized the partial holidays on Tuesday and Wednesday by putting-up very good totals on both of these days and showing appreciable growth. The film has now crossed the 100 crores mark at the box office in only 6 days, and is now the first film of 2020 to do so.

Day 7 (Thursday) Collection Note: Tanaji had an excellent first week at the box office. The film has collected around ~118 crores so far, and still has a lot of fuel left in its tank for a long run at the box office. The film was in a three way clash at the box office with 'Chhapaak' and 'Darbar' releasing simultaneously. 'Chhapaak's first week was strictly decent and 'Darbar' Hindi version's first week collections are pretty low. There are no new big releases this week at the box office, and 'Tanhaji' should be able to do well in second week too.

Day 8 (2nd Friday Collection) Note: The film held well on its second Friday as it witnessed only around 15-20% drop in its collections when compared to Thursday. 'Tanaji' collected around ~9.80 crores on its 8th day at the box office, which takes its overall total till date to approx 128 crores. The film is trending well, and should again grow in the weekends.

Day 9 (2nd Saturday) Collection Note: 'Tanhaji' witnessed a big growth of around 60-65% on its 2nd Saturday vis-à-vis 2nd Friday. The film collected around approx 16 crores on Day-9 taking the overall nine days total to approx 144 crores (all versions). The film is trending excellently at the box office, and 2nd Sunday's collections should be even better. The film will easily cross the 150 crore mark tomorrow, and will be heading towards the 200 crore milestone thereafter. The film is a HIT, and is the first successful Bollywood movie of the year 2020.

Day 10 (2nd Sunday) Collection Update: 'Tanaji' had an excellent second Sunday as it witnessed another good rise of around 30% vis-à-vis 2nd Saturday, when 2nd Saturday already had a big growth of around 60-65%. The film has collected around 21.15 crores (all versions), which takes the second weekend box office total to an excellent 47 crores approx. The film has held very well at the box office, as the drop in collections in 2nd weekend when compared to first weekend is a mere 20%. The film, so far, has collected around 165 crores from its 10 days run at the box office, and it shall now easily cross the 200 crore mark, unless it sees a dramatic fall in its collections which is mostly unlikely.
